Guided tour of the folk tales of the Canal Belt and the Jordaan

What secrets do the stately canal houses hide behind their graceful facades?
What has been passed down for centuries in the bustling streets of the Jordaan?

At first glance, the Jordaan and the Canal Belt seem like two different worlds: the working-class neighborhood full of living legends, music, and retold neighborhood stories versus the elegant district of wealthy merchants, artists, and influential city officials. The Westerkerk (Westerkerk) forms the literal and figurative border between these two districts. It is precisely this combination of both neighborhoods that makes this tour unique: two different worlds with one shared treasure—centuries of mysterious history and exaggerated folk tales.

During this unique tour of Amsterdam, our guides will show you where these stories originated and how they have lingered throughout the city, in streets, alleyways, courtyards, and buildings. In the Jordaan district, we'll follow the trail of riots, gossip, and myths: Sjakoo's Fort, the Bullebakmonster, the Eel Riot, and figures who became living legends, such as Johnny Jordaan and Willem Holleeder.

In the Canal Belt, we unravel the secrets behind mysterious facades and forgotten dramas: the fire at the old City Theatre, the House with the Heads, the vanished Jan Roodenpoortstoren, and the House with the Golden Chain.

“This tour isn't a romantic vision of the Jordaan or a tidy canal tour. It's a walk through the real, layered Amsterdam—a city walk where stories live longer than the people who started them. They've left traces you only see when someone points them out.”
