Guided Tour: The dark history, legends and ghost stories of Old Amsterdam

How did the ghost alley get its name? What drove women to tears at the Schreierstoren—lovesickness, guilt, or remorse? And what disaster broke loose in 1566, when children in an Amsterdam orphanage began screaming, foaming at the mouth, and climbing the walls like madmen?

Amsterdam's history is known not only in facts but also in whispers. During this historical city walk, our guides will take you through Old Amsterdam, among other things along the Waterlooplein the Kloveniersburgwal, Nieuwmarkt and the Sea dike  — places where seven virtues and seven sins have nestled themselves not only in stones, but also in stories.

Along the way, we challenge you: can you recognize the central virtue or sin in each story? Then you might win the "virtues and sins bingo."

This is where it all began. In the narrow streets of Old Amsterdam, virtues and sins lived side by side. We delved into the archives and unraveled the stories behind facades, alleys, and rumors. Fact and fiction are sometimes closer together. together than you think and we like to share that with everyone during these walks.”
